Messages from Mission Control
March 25th, 2001 Just a quick notice. I have finally begun posting in the "Sketchbook Diary" section so please head on over there and take a look. My attention has been focused on other things other than this web site for the past little while. I've been barrelling ahead with teaching myself Macromedia's Flash program, so you can look forward to some interesting multi-media elements to be added here once I'm finished. That should be fun. Something else that's been occupying my mind is the creation of an online comics site, co-created with my Dressed for Success co-creator, Chris Howard. This site will eventually be linked to or be incorporated into this larger site. I will then continue to develop the Rocket Girl & Kid Danger idea as well as post some interesting online pieces related to it. I will keep you all updated as things develop on that front.
February 4th, 2001 So, here we are; still in the beginning of a new year and new millenium. It seems like a new beginning for me as well. As I've been learning more at my day job as well as the addition of a nice new computer at home, I have been inspired to explore the fusion of the internet and comics. This has also given me a much needed boost in the motivation department. If anyone has been keeping tabs on this site as well as my previous messages from mission control, you would have noticed that I haven't exactly been keeping up with my intentions. Well that is going to change. This is a second chance for me as well as this site. I fully intend on developing the "Sketchbook Diary" section with images and notes as well as incorporating some interesting multi media elements with the help of Macromedia's Flash program. Along the way I hope to firm up my grasp on the characters and settings for Rocket Girl & Kid Danger and I hope to have their first joint adventure underway in comic form before another year goes by. So, barring any major setbacks I look forward to
developing this site as well as the comic concept as much as I can. I hope you will look
forward to it also. September 8th, 2000 My, my. It sure has been a while! Well, the only thing I can say is that I dropped out of the world of comics for a time. Not to say that I abandoned it. I merely was occupied with other things. I'm closing in on nearly a year since my last transmission and I'm pleased to report that I'm throwing myself back into the game. To be fair, I have been doing some dabbling here and there with Rocket Girl & Kid Danger. I even began to vigorously develop their first joint adventure which involved space pirates, but I quickly realized a few things. First of all, even though I was keen to plot out a full length story, I found that the characters and the setting wasn't fleshed out enough. I found myself having to ask too many questions which just generally got in the way of the writing process. Secondly, although I had recently finished drawing two 5 page stories I still didn't have a strong visual sense of what their world was like. This made me realize that what I should do was put the story off to the side and do some world building. So, in the past several weeks
I've been doodling thoughfully in my sketchbook as well as keeping a
notebook with ideas and explainations of how the world that these
characters inhabit works as well as fleshing out their personalities along
the way. This, as well as my re-newed interest in developing a Rocket Girl
& Kid Danger web site, has inspired me to create what I've come to
refer to as a "Sketchbook Diary". It
will be a section of the site that acts as an ongoing documentation of my
creative process. I will include brief "diary" style entries along with
scanned images from my sketchbook to illustrate how strong or poorly my
creative muse is working. Hopefully you the audience will find it as
interesting an idea as I do. September 19th 1999 Well, the first Rocket Girl and Kid Danger comic debuted three weeks back at the Canadian National Comic Book Expo held in downtown Toronto. There wasn't quite as big a turnout as was hoped for the show but it was a relief to have the comic "in the can" and ready to sell. Now the stage is set for future convention appearances to further spread the word about the book. At this moment I'm getting ready to begin writing the first big adventure for Rocket Girl & Kid Danger and hope to have a fleshed out story by year's end. My method of approach is to plot out the whole story first and see how many issues it works out to be and set forth to write the scripts and begin drawing. It's up in the air whether or not I will write the scripts for all the issues involved before hitting the drawing board or write and draw each script as I go. We'll see. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated as these decisions are made. At the same time I plan to further develop this site, adding images and new and updateable material for people to explore. I'll also look into developing some merchandise related to the characters that can be showcased along side the book itself. As Mel Brooks said in his movie "Space Balls" - "Merchandise! Where the real money for the movie is made". The same goes for comics. An individual can greatly supplement their income for comic publishing by introducing some small, low maintenance collectible that connect with their work. That and its just plain fun! |
